Western Connecticut Teams Reach Challenge Cup Championships in Three Divisions

January 30, 2016 – The Western Connecticut Youth Hockey Association (WCYHA) Junior Colonials, playing out of the Danbury Ice Arena, is a youth hockey organization typically comprised of players from Danbury, Bethel, Brookfield, Newtown, Southbury, New Milford, New Fairfield and neighboring towns in New York State. The weekend of January 22-24 saw the Junior Colonials complete one of their most successful tournaments at the Challenge Cup in Marlborough MA. With more than 40 organizations participating, this is one of the largest tournaments in New England and includes teams from NY, NJ, CT, MA, NH, RI and ME.

WCYHA had a total of five teams participating from the Squirt through Bantam levels and four of the WCYHA teams battled through the round robin portion of the tournament to make either the playoff round or championship game.

Championship Sunday featured three WCYHA teams playing within a 3-hour window, giving the fans plenty of exciting hockey to watch. The WCYHA PeeWee A team, playing in the Tier 3 division, lost in the final in a close game that was tied at 1 until late in the third period. The team battled hard to the end but we're not able to break through the strong defense of the Peabody Tanners in the closing minutes.

In the Squirt divisions both WCYHA teams, playing back to back, were successful in their respective championship games. The WCYHA Squirt A team, playing in the Tier 3 division, went undefeated in the round robin, winning all three games by wide margins. The final was a very evenly-matched game against Southern Maine, with the game winning goal in a 2-1 victory coming midway in the third period. Similarly, the WCYHA Squirt B team, playing in the Tier 4 division, went undefeated in the round robin, winning their games by wide margins. Their final was a close 4-3 win, with the Pelham Predators applying heavy pressure in the closing minutes to try and send the game into overtime.

All three WCYHA championship games demonstrated the kind of excitement that hockey fans love to see in youth hockey and that we fully expect to see in the upcoming CHC state tournaments. Only Southern Maine made more championship games than the Junior Colonials (four), while the Junior Colonials tied with two other organizations for most championship wins at two. It was WCYHA's best overall tournament showing, a sign that we should expect to see more strong performances by this organization in the future!
