Connecticut Kids Learn Hockey For Free

"Learn to Play Hockey" Program Wins with Families

Newington, CT - The next generation of hockey players are skating at the Newington Arena every Thursday night. In a new community program, children from throughout Central Connecticut are being introduced to the game at no cost.

The "Learn to Play Hockey" series provides boys and girls between the ages of 4-10 the opportunity to learn the basics from experienced coaches through this collaboration between The Newington Arena and GottaLoveCTHockey.com.

So far, it has been a hit with kids and parents such as Beth Kowal of West Hartford. "My daughter Sarah (6) has been (eager) to play hockey. We think this is a great chance to get out and play. The less intense nature of the skate benefits these kids to have more of a fun, enjoyable time on the ice."

Passion for the sport is being developed at an early age, a fact not lost on Connecticut Hockey Conference President Tom Reagan. The CHC is the governing body for USA Hockey in the state, home to nearly 12,000 members. "Growing the game of hockey is the most important thing. Our primary mission is to make it available to more participants across the state [of Connecticut]."

The program is doing just that. "If it wasn't for this event, I wouldn't have my son try hockey. It is good for them to be exposed to the game and to be exposed to the ice. My son is having a great time!" (Andy Kappus of Cheshire).

The one-hour sessions began April 17th and continue each Thursday at 6pm through June 19th. Participants are also able to borrow equipment at no cost based on availability. The endeavor would not be possible without the financial support of local community–focused companies, such as Industrial Automation (Plainville), Noble Furnace (East Windsor), B & F Machine (New Britain), Joe's Guitars (Wallingford).
